Below, he shares his experience at Fairfield University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Owen: Fairfield University feels like an oasis. It resides in the beautiful suburban beach town of Fairfield, Connecticut. From end to end, one can walk this lovely campus in about thirty minutes. The compact nature creates a sense of community that is unique to Fairfield; everyones face feels familiar and every destination feels close. And escaping the oasis is easy: a free shuttle runs a loop every half hour, to the train station (which provides a direct line to Grand Central Station in New York City), the downtown area, and the local supermarket. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Owen:The physical sense of community and easy access extends to the professors. Fairfields typically small class sizes allow for students to form genuine relationships with their educators. Professors go beyond making themselves available for regular office hours. They take time to talk with students after classes, offer research partnerships, and recommend books tailored to ones interests. Some will even sit down with a student for coffee and offer valuable career counseling and insight. One always gets the feeling that the professors take their work with students seriously and that they want what is best for their students. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Owen:From top to bottom, the university works to maintain a continuous sense of community. Dorm life is a key piece of this community. Incoming freshmen are surveyed based on preferences, like average bed time and study habits, then placed with a roommate who is a good match. The semi-random assignment process pushes freshmen to make new friends on the first day. Official events support community bonding, but often, its the casual drop-ins, the open doors, and friendly hellos that build the sense of togetherness among hallmates. Fairfield only has one main dining hall, called Barone, and it extends the communal feeling of the dorms outward. Its hard to walk into the dining hall without seeing a friend from a class, a dorm, or a club, and Barone can provide an all-day space for socialization and studying. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Owen:The university is a force in the worlds of nursing and business, boasting two excellent schools for both that produce students who are almost immediately employed after graduation. The majors outside of these programs also offer wonderful opportunity and support. I can say personally that my experience as a theatre major at Fairfield has led in large part to my deep love and appreciation for my time at the university. I had professors who were actively interested in my personal and academic growth, who worked alongside me to produce plays, and who always pushed me to realize my potential to create brilliant theatre. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Owen:Meeting people as a freshman can take time, but the school works hard to create spaces for building relationships. Each dorm has weekly events for all of its residents. Clubs actively seek out new recruits and eagerly bring them into the fold. Movie nights, lecture series, concerts, church services, and community outings stack the monthly calendar with opportunities to make friends. In my experience, my closest and most quickly-made friends came from my involvement in clubs and extracurricular programs. Each club functions as a community within the larger community, and these mini-communities take care of their members. Everyone is offered opportunities to be responsible for some aspect of the club and chances to gain respect by working alongside veteran club members as an equal. Fairfields active club, program, and sports communities take the place of Greek life on campus. For me, the absence of fraternities and sororities seemed to facilitate making friends across diverse groups of people. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Owen:Because of the business and nursing Schools' prominent reputations, high profile companies consistently recruit on campus. I had a strong idea of my path immediately after college and did not make much use of the career center, however I did make use of other support services. The schools counseling service is filled with compassionate and qualified individuals who, like the professors, always have a students best interests at heart. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Owen:Every dorm at Fairfield has multiple lounges and study areas that are available to any student. The library is spacious and filled with a variety of resource rooms for a number of purposes. Around finals time, the resource rooms get quite crowded and often require a reservation, but students are also free to use classrooms as study spacesensuring that everyone has the space they need to prepare. Describe the surrounding town. Owen:The town surrounding the university has a quiet suburban feel. There are a number of good restaurants and coffee shops in the downtown area, but in terms of nightlife, the town itself is quiet. Students mostly stay on campus to socialize, but there is typically enough going on to keep everyone engaged and happy. One of the true perks of Fairfield University is its proximity to Fairfield Beach. Many seniors live in beach houses, and there are a number of memorable events held at the beach. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Owen:My experience with the FairfieldTheatre program involving one of my professors was a microcosm of the broader Fairfield University experience. At one point, in a moment of crisis, I turned to one of my professors and spilled out a myriad of academic struggles, fears of the future, and personal doubts. Sitting in her office, we talked through a plan and a path for the future. She expressed firm, unyielding belief in my ability to become a successful student and artist, and offered continued support along the way. I have stayed in contact with her ever since, checking in for career advice, encouragement, and wisdom. ACT Online Registration ACT, also known as American College testing is the exam taken by high school students. ACT is a standardized and recognized test taken by students to gain admissions in colleges and universities in the United States. Good ACT score helps students get admission into their desired colleges as the test examines academic knowledge of the student in 4 different areas. ACT test paper consists of 4 main sections: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science Reasoning. ACT offers an optional Writing section as well and the students can choose to attempt this section as well if they prefer getting their score including the Writing section. There are different options to sign up for ACT but the Online Registration method is the fastest method to sign up for the ACT exam. Students can choose their desired test center according to their convenience, but have to check if the particular test center has available space or not. Once the preferred test center is chosen, then one can print out admission ticket from the website as well. Students can take ACT assessment with or without including the Writing section and it will charge few extra dollars if the section is included. Students can sign up for online registration by creating their ACT web account and it then provides them all the further information required to attend the test. ACT is conducted 4 to 6 times a year depending on the individual state in the United States and hence the students can register and take the test according to their convenience.

Actively Reading the SAT Reading Test Today’s blog post kicks off a 3-part series that contains the secret to success on the SAT. That may overstate it a bit, but make no mistake, students who take this approach to the SAT uniformly do much better on the test. Today we will be focusing on the SAT reading test.So what’s the secret to the score of your dreams on the SAT? Let’s get right to it: you need to be an active test-taker.What does it mean to be an active test-taker? We’ll get into what that means for the SAT writing and math sections in future blog posts, but for now we’ll focus on active reading comprehension on the SAT.A Good Example of Active ReadingA Not-So-Good Example of Active ReadingI’ve tutored the SAT for eight years now, and in that time I’ve seen students take many different approaches to the test. I’ve watched hundreds of students working their way through SAT questions and practice passages. There have been good strategies, bad strategies, and no strategies at all.Here is the worst way students approach reading comprehension on the SAT: passively. With their hands in their lap and pencil on the table, leaning back in their chair, letting their eyes drift over the reading passage. After a few minutes, they look up and say “I’m done!” And when I ask them what the passage was all about, most of these students have a hard time accurately summarizing the main argument.Our SAT tutors help students learn to conquer tough SAT reading comprehension passages by changing their approach. The best SAT reading comprehension strategy is simple and straightforward: read actively, not passively. Let’s talk about what it means to read actively.The Five Fundamental Steps of Active ReadingPosture (and attitude) matter. Don’t discount the importance of sitting up in your chair, pencil in hand, and with some tension present. While being too nervous can hinder your performance, some nerves are helpful to keep you alert and focused. If you make it a habit to read every SAT rea ding comprehension passage with pencil in hand, you’ll be more likely to engage with the passage and take notes. Which brings us to step 2…Take notes while you’re reading the passage. This is the piece of advice students least want to hearâ€"it’s rare to find a student who voluntarily takes notes while reading. However, this is probably the single most important recommendation in the list. Note-taking while you’re reading serves several purposes: it helps you find answers more quickly when you return to the passage; it helps you actively process the author’s arguments; and it helps you stay focused better than just reading does. So what should these notes look like?Write a brief summary of each paragraph in the margin. What should your notes not look like? Every line of a paragraph shouldn’t be underlined, and there should be actual words written down in the margins. Underlining, circling, and starring has its place in note-taking, but the point of taking notes on SAT reading passages is to process actively. When you know that you have to briefly summarize each paragraph, you’ll have an easier time focusing on what you’re reading and thinking about its purpose in the context of the passage. Just underlining everything may help your eyes follow along with the words, but it doesn’t help you make sense of what you’ve read.Write down the author’s main argument once you’re done reading. Don’t head straight for the questions! Take 30 seconds to process what you’ve just read and decide what the author’s overall argument is. Are they for or against an issue? What kind of evidence did they use? Do they agree or disagree with most other people in their field? Many SAT reading comprehension questions will ask you about the significance of a section of the passage in the context of the main argument of the entire passage. If you don’t know the main argument, you’re at a major disadvantage. Remember, don’t let yourself off the hookâ€"a ctually write the main argument down on the page. It’s the only way to make sure you really understand the passage!Practice active reading on the SAT reading comprehension questions as well. Active reading strategies aren’t just for reading the passage itself. SAT reading questions can be tricky. Make sure you take the time to read each question carefully. Circle or underline important words or line references, and take the time to refer back to the passage. Work through the answer choices methodically, eliminating wrong answers as you go. Read the answer choices actively and carefully tooâ€"sometimes an answer will look tempting, but one word in the answer is wrong and disqualifies it. The correct answer will answer the question being asked and be factually correct.Still having trouble with SAT reading comprehension? Try these bonus tips:Make a movie of the passage in your head. Stay with me hereâ€"I know this sounds cheesy and irrelevant. However, research has shown  that the ability to visualize what you’re reading is a strong predictor of reading comprehension success. So if you’re having a hard time focusing on a passage or understanding it, pretend you’re turning it into a movie and you’re the director. What does it look like visually? How do the actors relate to each other? What’s the body language and the unspoken subtext? You’re reading one of those dry passages from the 1800sâ€"now imagine Frederick Douglass standing at a podium on a hot summer day, thundering down judgment on a crowd of people ready to congratulate themselves for being on the right side of the slavery controversy. Imagine them exchanging shocked glances, faces burning with embarrassment. All of a sudden, the passage comes alive and you, the reader, get it on a much deeper level.Know yourself. Most students have passages they like and passages they don’t like. This varies from student to student. Some enjoy the Frederick Douglass passage mentioned above (that’s me !), while others would read passages about astrophysics and varieties of oak trees all day long (definitely not me). Self-knowledge is an important component of success on SAT reading comprehension. Because I know that I struggle to focus on science passages, I hold myself to a higher standard on those passages. Be honest with yourself and identify the types of passages you struggle with. Then, double down on those passages on test day.SAT reading comprehension is tough for everyone. Sixty-five minutes straight of reading challenging passages and answering complex questions is a test of not just your reading ability, but also your ability to focus on a task for a long period of time. Learning to be an active reader on the SAT isn’t a magic pill for score improvement. However, practiced consistently, active reading will consi derably improve your confidence on SAT reading comprehensionâ€"and ultimately your score as well.
